The Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD), Government of Jharkhand announced the Picture Jharkhand Photography Contest on the 19th of August on World Photography Day with theme: Jharkhand. Its Land, People and Culture. The contest has been organized in partnership with the Jharkhand Photographic Association, National Institute of Design (academic partner) and Jharcraft (lead prize sponsor). The contest was open to all and was conducted online through www.picturejharkhand.com. The contest closed on 29th November.
A total of 1903 photographs was submitted from 163 cities. The organisers shortlisted Top 100 photographs through a preliminary jury process and recommended Top 25 photographs to the Grand Jury panel that comprised of eminent international, national and regional professionals, viz. Aida Muluneh (Ethiopia), Akintunde Akinleye (Nigeria), Dinesh Khanna (Gurgaon), Rafique Sayyed (Mumbai), Sudhir John Horo (Ranchi), Rishi Singhal (Gandhinagar), Sugandha Dubey (Gurgaon), Robin Banerjee (Kolkata), Mukesh Srivastava (Dhanbad), Ashok Karan (Ranchi) and Sanjay Bose (Ranchi). After a very elaborate process, the grand jury has been able to rank these shortlisted 25 photographs and the organisers have thereby been able to identify the Grand Prize Winner.
To conclude this engrossing initiative, IPRD is organizing an Award Ceremony on the 28th of December at Audrey House in Ranchi to declare the Grand Prize Winner, confer awards and certificates to the winners and felicitate photographers from Jharkhand who comprised the Grand Jury of the contest. The Grand Prize Winner shall win a 3-day trip to Belgrade, Serbia where the winner will be able interact with local photographers and undertake a short photography assignment. (Photography is a very popular visual art-form in Serbia with a very vibrant photography sub-culture, manifested through its numerous photo clubs.) The Top 10 photographers shall be rewarded with professional bags for photography equipment and Top 11-Top 15 shall receive gift hampers from Jharcraft. All the Top 25 photographers shall receive a certificate and a copy each of specially autographed book by one of India's leading photographers.
The award ceremony shall be followed by the inauguration of the Picture Jharkhand Photography Exhibition which shall showcase the winning entries from the contest as well as feature some of the selected works of Robin Banerjee, Mukesh Srivastava, Ashok Karan and Sanjay Bose – senior photographers from Jharkhand. The exhibition shall be open every day to the public during the Picture Jharkhand Photo Week (29th of December to 4th of January) at Audrey House. During the Photo Week, Audrey House shall be abuzz with various activities that will include photo-walks during the daytime, interactive presentations in the evening and food tasting of unique Jharkhand cuisine (as part of a special Taste Jharkhand initiative spearheaded by the Department of Hotel Management, Institute of Science and Management, Ranchi). IPRD is keen to use this platform to encourage the youth in Jharkhand to try photography not just as a hobby but also as a viable career path. During the Photo Week, IPRD intends to enthuse photographers to explore, discover and document the Heritage, Culture, Lifestyle and Youth of the city of Ranchi through Photo-walk sessions under the guidance of professional and reputed photographers. These photo-walks are being organized in partnership with Jharkhand Photographic Association and Department of Mass Communications, St. Xavier's College, Ranchi. These photo walks are open to all at no cost. However, there are limited seats, available at first come, first served basis.
